VOICEOVER: For each of us, there is a moment of discovery. We turn a page. We raise a hand. And just then, in a flash in a synapse, we learn that life is elemental, and this knowledge changes everything. They human element is the element of change. It gives us footing to stand fiercely and face the future. It is a way of seeing that gives us a way of touching issues, ambitions, lives. The human element. Nothing is more elemental.
VOICEOVER: Approximately 15 weeks later, the tigress gives birth to two to four cubs. She suckles them for eight weeks, after which she brings them prey to eat, as well. At 11 weeks the cubs can hunt on their own. The tiger cubs stay with their mother for two to three years, at which time she is ready to mate again. Bengal tigers are nocturnal. They hunt at night. Though powerful and quick over short distances, they stalk their prey because they cannot outrun faster prey. The tiger kills small prey with a bite on the back or the neck and large prey with a bite to the throat.
VOICEOVER: It is a classic example of military engineering and a marvel of human ingenuity. Built with 6 million bricks, its walls stand 20 feet high and four feet thick. Two sides face the sea, two towards land. It would take five years for William Henry Chase, the chief engineer, to construct Barrancas. He chose to build the fort into a bluff that served as a glacis. This earthen slope kept the fort hidden from land based artillery. Sixteen tons of sand was moved, creating a 20 foot wide ditch called a dry moat. An attack to this land side of the fort would be suicide.
